Budget retailer Poundland has announced it is to open a new store in Carlisle’s St Nicholas Gate Retail Park - creating about 20 new jobs. It follows the recent opening of B&M and Asda. Poundland hopes to take over the unit next door to Asda. It will now consult with nearby residents before submitting a planning application.

Shoppers in west Cumbria are being urged to support local businesses this Christmas. The Whitehaven Action Group is holding a Local Shop Day in the town this Saturday to give the area a festive boost. People are encouraged to pop into town and buy at least one product locally rather than going elsewhere.

A Cumbrian cycle route has been voted best in Britain. Readers of the UK magazine Cycling Plus chose the 40-mile Lake District Loop - which takes in Coniston Water and the challenging Wrynose Pass - above routes in Northern Scotland, the Yorkshire Dales, North Devon and Wales.

A paraglider who suffered serious head and leg injuries after being blown off course has been described as ‘stable’. The man in his 50s, from the Windermere area, had to rescued from the Old Man of Coniston at about 1.25pm yesterday. He was treated at the scene by the Great North Air Ambulance’s doctor, then flown to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.
