The Government has approved a £2.3 million scheme to upgrade the access points into the Eden Business Park and Gilwilly Industrial Estate in Penrith.Improving access will help unlock new land at Gilwilly, which has been identified for future growth. Work is expected to begin in October next year and be completed by February 2015.

The Communities Secretary has upheld a decision by Cumbria County Council to refuse planning permission to use the Keekle Head former open cast coal mine in west Cumbria as a site to store up to a million cubic metres of low-level radioactive waste for the next 50 years.

The male driver of a Vauxhall Astra which ended up in a ditch next the A689 near Crosby-on-Eden this afternoon was not injured, say police. The accident happened at 1.56pm, on a stretch of road near the turning for Walby Farm Park. The cause of the accident is not yet known.

A man has been imprisoned for failing to pay £220,000 he owed following a conviction for offences including money laundering and conspiring to import illegal steroids. Police say that a Land Rover was stolen from a farm in the Southwaite area last night. The vehicle was only used for farm work and was not roadworthy. Diesel and tools were also taken from a nearby outbuilding. Anyone with information is asked to contact Cumbria Police on 101.

Reducing, recycling and reusing festive waste will help residents to have a green 2014, say Carlisle City Council. They are advising people to use a greenbox, garden waste bin and greenbags to recycle their items. Refuse and recycling dates in the city will change over the festive period. Collections on December 25, 26 and 27 will all happen two days later than normal, while collections on January 1, 2 and 3 will be made a day later than usual.

As an update to the earlier snippet, I can confirm that a white van broke down on the hard shoulder of the M6 near Penrith at about 10.57am this morning. Police were called to the scene but no action was required, and a spokeswoman said there were no reports of injuries.
